Limestone is a very popular choice but can be a little tricky to keep clean. The stone is acid and alkali sensitive so we must be careful of the products we use to clean the stone. The main problem that we find with the stone is etching. Etching occurs when any acid or alkali comes into contact with the sensitive stone. Dull marks will appear on the surface of the stone where the caustic product attacks the calcite in the stone.
Some limestones are soft and very porous while others can be hard. The key to limestone is choosing the correct stone for the environment in which it will be used. Many limestones come in a honed (matte) finish. These stones need to be properly sealed and from time to time will need professional service. Limestone will scratch and etch, but these problems can be resolved by Hamilton's Tile & Stone.
